Not everyone wants the Start menu back in Windows

The Windows Start menu is set to make its official comeback in Windows 10, and although this should be good news for most of those running the operating system on a desktop computer, not everyone is excited about this change in the next OS version.

In fact, some users are now asking Microsoft on the UserVoice feedback thread to keep the Start screen turned on by default in Windows 10, thus making the Start menu just a backup option for those who want to return to the traditional desktop.

For the record, both the Start menu and the Start screen will be available in Windows 10, each depending on the type of device you will be using: tablets will get the Start screen, while PC users will be provided with the Start menu.

So, why are users so keen on keeping the Start screen around in Windows 10? Basically, they claim that the Start screen is faster, easier to keep clean, better for big screens, and more effective when it comes to launching apps, searching, or looking for specific settings.

And this comments pretty much sums it all:

“Not keen on the junk added to the Windows 10 start screen on the left. Please give us the option for a clean modern Start screen. This is my ‘command center.’ In time, people will love this more than the menu... so stick with it and don't pull a traditional Microsoft who gives up too soon to vocal feedback from those who won't get with the times.”

Both the Start menu and the Start screen will be there

Microsoft is no longer trying to device what’s better for users, and in Windows 10, both features are going to be available, so everyone can decide which one they want.

Basically, the default configuration will vary based on the aforementioned approach, but in case some users feel like they want the Start menu instead of the Start screen (and vice versa), this will be easy to change with just a few clicks.

In Windows 10 Technical Preview, users can switch from the Start menu to the Start screen from the taskbar options menu, and the very same behavior is expected to be offered in the final version of the operating system as well.
