“Gossip Girl” is, for fashionistas all over, what “SATC” also was years ago: a fashion bible where they see what’s hot, what’s not and what’s downright unimaginable. In this last category would also fall Leighton Meester’s latest outfit on the red carpet.

The other night, the actress was at the launch of the Court of Jewels recreation at Harry Winston in NYC, as also was Halle Berry: both opted for black, but with vastly different results.

While Berry was classy as always in a strapless, simple column dress that emphasized her figure, Leighton opted for something a bit… out of the ordinary, for lack of a better term.

The “Gossip Girl” star rocked a lace jumpsuit by Marchesa, with a plunging neckline and a very revealing back – but, no matter how daring it was, it still failed to earn her points with industry watchers.

E! Online’s Fashion Police, for instance, believes the young actress is simply trying too hard to prove she’s better and bolder than her onscreen character – thus ruining it.

It’s over the top, and not in a good way, the e-zine says. Leighton would probably look much better in outfits that compliment her body instead of being so “loud.”

“Leighton has really outdone herself this time. Her sheer, plunging lace one-piece is as far away from sweetly styled Blair Waldorf as she could get. Hey, Leight, you are much edgier than your G.G. alter ego – we get it,” E! writes.

TMZ, though not boasting a Fashion Police section, also takes notice of Leighton’s odd outfit, saying that only a person who loses a bet would go out wearing something like that in public.

“Having apparently lost some sort of bet, ‘Gossip Girl’ star Leighton Meester showed up to an event in NYC last night leaving little to the imagination... by wearing an unfortunate lacy sheer [backside]-flashing genie pant one-piece jumper thing,” TMZ writes.

It’s not just that the outfit showed too muck skin that was the problem with it: it simply did not look good on Leighton. It was both too asymmetrical and too “loud” to suit her, it is being said.
