Then what?

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta 1 is scheduled for availability in the coming week. Sometime between Monday 16 and Sunday 22 July, the first service pack for Windows Vista will follow the operating system in beta stage a little under six moths since the platform was introduced to the general public. One thing that will miss from the testing milestone of Vista SP1 will be a pre-release version of Internet Explorer 8.

Because Vista SP1 is planned for the end of this year, while IE8 will only drop in the second half of 2008, or even early 2009, there is no connection between the development cycles of Vista SP1 and the next version of the Internet Explorer browser. Still, there have been reports that IE8 Beta 1 will be released after Vista SP1 in November 2007.

Since back in January 2007, even before Vista hit the shelves, Microsoft revealed that SP1 would be nothing more than a standard refresh containing "security updates, hotfixes, as well as limited other changes focused on improving quality." Initially announced for the second half of 2007, Windows Vista SP1's availability date was narrowed down to November, with the beta dropping in mid July.

One of the core alterations that SP1 will introduce to Windows Vista is connected with the default Windows Desktop Search mechanism. Vista's built in search functionality will be changed in order to better accommodate third party products such as Google desktop.

Microsoft will resolve the issues that have plagued Windows Vista ReadyBoost, but also the boot and shutdown times, and the poor performance associated with copying files. Additionally, SP1 will enhance Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption and will provide support for Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) on x64 architectures.
