The full release notes documenting all the changes in the latest OS X update

In releasing OS X 10.7.4 to the public yesterday, Apple populated its Support site with a flurry of knowledge-base articles to document the changes included in the latest versions of its Client and Server OSes.

As usual, the changelogs served up via Support | Downloads are incomplete. Apple has dished out just enough information about its updates to inform everyone on the changes that matter to regular folks.

However, the Cupertino-based computer giant also included links to the full release notes for OS X Lion 10.7.4 Client and Server, for power users.

If that’s you, Apple will have you know that OS X Lion 10.7.4 Client includes many more fixes than meets the eye. Here’s the breakdown:

The OS X Lion v10.7.4 Update includes fixes that: · Resolve an issue in which the "Reopen windows when logging back in" setting is always enabled. · Improve compatibility with certain British third-party USB keyboards. · Address permission issues that may be caused if you use the Get Info inspector function "Apply to enclosed items…" on your home directory. For more information, see this article. · Improve Internet sharing of PPPoE connections. · Improve using a proxy auto-configuration (PAC) file. · Address an issue that may prevent files from being saved to an SMB server. · Improve printing to an SMB print queue. · Improve performance when connecting to a WebDAV server. · Enable automatic login for NIS accounts. · Include RAW image compatibility for additional digital cameras. · Improve the reliability of binding and logging into Active Directory accounts. · The OS X Lion v10.7.4 Update includes Safari 5.1.6, which contains stability improvements.

Next up, the Lion Server 10.7.4 update. Apple’s installer updates Lion Server v10.7, v10.7.1, v10.7.2 and v10.7.3 to version 10.7.4 and is recommended for all Lion Server users.

Admins have three options to choose from: use Software Update; install from a standalone installer; or install on a remote server via Server Admin or the 'softwareupdate' command-line utility. The release notes follow below:

This update includes improvements in the areas listed below, as well as ones delivered with the Lion Server 10.7.3, 10.7.2 and 10.7.1 updates.

File Sharing

· defining custom names for file share points · copying files and Finder information over SMB · general reliability of SMB file services · using WebDAV with third-party iOS clients · AFP service reliability, fixing the issue that was reported as "TCP Listener returned error on accept" in the AppleFileServiceError.log

Profile Manager

· enhanced payloads and management settings for iOS and OS X clients: · Spotlight and iCloud preference panes on OS X · Siri access at the lock screen on iOS · mobile account sync interval on OS X · disk access on OS X · installing iOS applications: installing a new app no longer causes existing apps to be reinstalled · reliability of device enrollments after changing server hostname · configuring VPN management settings · using profiles to join 802.1x networks

Mobile Accounts and Managed Preferences

· applying managed preferences to members of a nested Active Directory group · home directory synchronization for Active Directory users with mobile accounts · deleting a mobile account when it expires

Server Administration

· Server app stability · reconfiguring DNS settings when changing hostnames · restoring an Open Directory archive created in Snow Leopard Server · preserving local accounts during upgrade and migration

Mail Server

· improved reliability of SMTP services · prevent overwriting of manually configured greylisted mail servers

Web Server

· improved handling of URL redirects and alias matches

Xsan

· Xsan filesystem stability · expanding an Xsan data volume · Additional Information

Both updates include the security fixes included in Apple’s Security Update 2012-002.
