There have been many press releases and rumors about what may or may not occur over the course of next year, so ABI Research figured it would narrow down the list at least a bit with its latest whitepaper.

With all that has happened during 2010, some previous assumptions were dismantled in favor of others as far as the IT industry goes.

Tablets proved to be successful instead of doomed while netbooks grew as a market by less than it was originally anticipated, among other things.

Meanwhile, the DRAM and NAND markets were not consistent when it came to ASPs and sales, though the overall IT market did mostly flourish compared to last year.

Of course, this is mostly because 2009 was a particularly troublesome year, and the twists and turns led to many speculations about what 2011 would be like.

So far, the economy has been recovering a bit slowly, but company profits seem to be rising anyway, even though budgets remain tight.

Some have said that mobile advertising will surge next year, others that the iPad would keep growing in sales or see its market share eroded, depending on who one asks.

All in all, the industry is currently submerged in a sea of assumptions, enough so that it is actually very hard to tell what will happen over the course of the next two months, let alone the whole year.

ABI research, thus, made a valiant effort and figured it would at least publish a whitepaper in which it states clearly what will not happen in 2011.

About two dozen analysts pooled their wits and knowledge and ended up creating what can be seen as a “mix of expert opinion, critical assessments and wry humor.”

The study is simply called "What’s NOT Going to Happen in 2011," can be acquired via direct download from this page and covers such topics as mobile applications, home entertainment, automotive technologies, mobile Internet devices and others.
