The largest Scorpio is mobile

As many of you know, Western Digital's portable line dubbed "Passport" uses WD's own 2.5" mobile hard disk drive units. And since things can hardly be called "static" in the world of magnetic storage, Western Digital decided to roll out two new hard disk drive units.

The first was the all awaited 750GB Caviar SE16 desktop drive. However, most system integrators were a lot more interested in the coming of the most capacitous Scorpio drive. Packing 250GB in a 2.5" form factor wasn't easy but it seems that Western Digital has managed to roll out another rock solid product.

This Scorpio follows the existing design and as a result it has almost the same thermal and power specifications as its smaller brothers. Nothing has changed on the mechanical part since the new drive comes with the same 5400rpm capable platters and an identical 8MB data buffer.

Evidently the next logical step for WD was to integrate the Scorpio in the Passport line. And that's how the 250GB Passport came to life. Regarding the arrival of the new mobile storage unit, Jim Welsh, vice president and general manager of WD's branded products group said:

"The rich, storage-hungry media content generated by 10 mega-pixel digital cameras and HD video camcorders makes the one-quarter terabyte WD Passport Drive a compelling solution. WD Passport is a travel-friendly gadget for consumers who want to carry their entire digital portfolio with them."

So there you have it, then. Another Passport is out on the market ready to satisfy even the most storage-space hungry customers. Western Digital has also released the expected MSRP for this device so if you want it you will be able to get it from your local retailer in a matter of days. And $199 doesn't seem much when you can carry 250GB of data in your pocket now, does it?

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there.
