Western Digital would not be one of the world's top makers of HDDs if it didn't keep up with current trends, so of course it would take advantage of CES 2011 to release a new hard disk drive.

Western Digital already has a great number of HDDs on sale, from 3.5-inch desktop drives to more compact laptops units, even external and/or portable ones.

With the impending 2011 edition of the International Consumer Electronics Show, it would be strange if WD didn't have anything on hand.

Sure enough, even though CES hasn't even started, the company issued a press release in which it details one of its newest storage units.

The device in question is a new member for the Scorpio Black family of 2.5-inch hard disk drives, one whose name is WD7500BPKT.

It has a capacity of 740 GB while operating at a platter speed of 7,200 RPM (rotations per minute). Additionally, it features the SATA 3.0 Gbos interface and 16 MB of buffer memory.

Not only that, but, as one would expect, it utilizes the Advanced Format Technology, which sets the sector size to 4 KB.

"Our most demanding customers have come to expect "no compromises" from all of our Black series products," explains Matt Rutledge, vice president of product marketing for WD.

"The new WD Scorpio Black drive does not disappoint, providing users of portable devices the necessary speed, significant storage and efficient power management needed to enjoy their favorite HD content, high resolution images, powerful office applications or gaming at home, in the office or on the road," he added.

The product is aimed at laptops and “has been tested across multiple platforms to allow anyone a successful upgrade of speed and performance to their current notebook system.”

Finally, the hard disk has a price of $149 and is backed by a five-year warranty.
