Having to pay a recurring fee in order to be allowed to use a set amount of gigabytes on an online server, for backup purposes and such, can become a drag, so Western Digital has released an alternative.

This alternative, called My Cloud, could put consumer cloud out of business if promoted enough.

Essentially, it is a miniaturized version of a cloud server, which any PC, smartphone, tablet, laptop, Wi-Fi gadget or any other device with a web connection can link to, from any place and at any time.

All you need is to have the My Cloud operational and connected to the Internet and voila! You can retrieve files or stream via Internet even if you happen to be on a hiking trip. Sure, it'll depend on your signal, but that goes for public cloud too, so that's no drawback.

Western Digital has 2 TB and 3 TB My Cloud models, for $149/€149 and $249.99/€249.99.
