Storage behemoths are becoming an increasingly common sight

It would seem the manufacturers of external storage devices have gone a little crazy lately, as they keep launching new models with increasingly higher storage capacities. And the target, at least for the time being, seems to be the 2 TB value, as any company that considers itself an important player on the storage market has come up with such a device, the latest to join the group being the people over at Western Digital.

The new external storage devices from Western Digital provide an enhanced level of data protection, as the system can be set by users to reserve half of its capacity to mirror users' data in real time using RAID technology - in this case, the RAID 1 setting. Moreover, the My Book World Edition II provides enhanced remote-access features, thus offering users a simple and secure way to access and share data, photos and music wherever they might be and even if the host computer is switched off.

And since we've mentioned My Book World Edition II, it's worth mentioning that this particular model also comes packed with at 1000/100/10 compatible Ethernet connection, sports a capacity gauge, is fitted with an efficient convection cooling system and a thermostatically controlled fan and even comes packed with the EMC Retrospect Express backup software that allows users to carry out on-demand or scheduled backup operations.

"The explosive growth in devices that create rich multimedia content - from digital cameras to music players to digital video camcorders - continues to drive consumers' insatiable demand for more storage capacity. The popular My Book family of external drives delivers peace of mind in a simple solution that can provide remote access, sharing, protection and storing of precious files," said Jim Welsh, vice president and general manager of WD's Branded Products and Consumer Electronics businesses.

The new 2 TB models (My Book World Edition II, My Book Pro Edition II, My Book Premium Edition II) from Western Digital are available at various distributors in the $749 to $799 price range, which are actually pretty good price tags for such behemoth-class storage devices.
