Frostbite 3 may produce great visuals, but a good story is also needed

After lots of teasing and plenty of leaks, Electronic Arts and DICE have revealed Battlefield 4 earlier this week, showcasing a massive 17-minute gameplay video that presents a mission from the single-player campaign of the upcoming first-person shooter.

While without a doubt the new shooter will be a gorgeous experience, thanks to the new and improved Frostbite 3 engine that promises even better visuals than Battlefield 3's Frostbite 2, it's going to take a lot more than pretty graphics to actually turn the game into a worthwhile experience.

First-person shooters are a dime a dozen nowadays but, even after all the Call of Duty titles, the Battlefield ones and the different other franchises that sell millions of copies, the highest rated first-person shooters of all time are Half-Life 2, BioShock 1 and BioShock Infinite, according to Metacritic.

While they aren't military shooters, like Battlefield, they prove that a first-person experience needs a great story besides the actual shooter mechanics to actually stand out from the rest and remain a milestone in the history of the gaming industry.

It seems that DICE has also figured this out, as it promises to deliver a much more dramatic experience with the single-player campaign of Battlefield 4.

Battlefield 3 promised much of the same but the end result was a convoluted plot that only served to take players from different set piece moments to others and barely prepared them for the game's multiplayer, which many Battlefield veterans jumped right into from the get-go, ignoring the single-player element.

You can certainly bet that Battlefield 4 will once again feature a top-notch multiplayer experience but it would be nice if the game's developers also tried to fit in a good – or at least decent – story in the single-player campaign.

What do you think? Will you buy Battlefield 4 purely for its multiplayer or are you still going to try out its single-player campaign?
