The developers have released a new update for Webconverger

Webconverger is a Linux distribution used for deployment in places like offices or Internet cafes, where only web applications are used. A new update has been released and the version number has advanced to 27.

There are not too many distros acting as a Kiosk, but the competition is fierce. A Kiosk is usually a Linux distro that works just like a regular system, but it restricts users’ access to its inner working, making it impossible to install apps, for example. There are numerous uses for this kind of operating systems and the guys who make Webconverger know this very well or else they wouldn't charge money for it.

This type of OS is actually very useful when it needs to work in a public PC, like a cafe or library. The goal is to have a working system for the users and to keep it functional for as long as possible. This can be easily achieved if you remove the user's power to mess with the system and that means that one can't install or delete anything.

Webconverger is a rather small update, but it's an important one

Even if the latest version of Webconverger seems to be rather tame, when it comes to implementing new features, the truth is that the upgrade is more important that it looks. If we take a look at the new Intel support alone, we'll see that it's more than welcomed.

The developers also explained a while ago that this was one of the few distros that didn't actually have an End Of Life and they offered comparisons with the Windows systems and all of them have expiration dates.

"Like Windows XP before it, Windows 7 is reaching "End of Life" (EOL) on October 31, 2014. This event presents all sorts of logistical nightmares for IT administrators around the world. In comparison Webconverger does NOT have an End of Life! Webconverger deployments will just carry on working into the future, providing a standard Web interface, with an up-to-date, security supported OS+browser behind it. We aim to support our software with updates and keep our API stable for ever," read the official website.

The developers have explained that besides the improved Intel support, the website has been updated as well, the latest Firefox 34 has been included, a new Linux kernel 3.16 has been included, and the Flash component has received a few security updates.

Users of the distribution can update from the previous version. For more details, you can read the official announcement and you can download Webconverger 27 right now from Softpedia.
