Lost wax models now being 3D printed in that very material

Wax has been used a lot in history, for various things from sealing letters to making life-sized sculptures, so it stands to reason that it would be used in 3D printing as well.

So here we are. Design for Craft (DfC), an Italian company focused on developing new and innovative types of filament, has created the first wax filaments for FFF/FDM 3D printing.

Stereolithography 3D printers have an easier time using wax and other substances of similar behavior, but FFF 3D printing (fused deposition modeling) is more popular among jewelers and other craftsmen.

Anyway, lost-wax casting has, ironically enough, been easier to do with 3D printing from plastic extruder, instead of, well, wax.

With the new filaments from DFC, the process will live up to its name again. The whole idea is still in beta testing though.
