Monique Pool jokingly says that she's been “slothified”

Some years ago, Monique Pool and her colleagues at the Green Heritage Suriname got into the habit of rescuing sloths that had been left homeless by companies carrying out deforestation activities in the Guiana Shield.

On one occasion, the conservationist found that, contrary to her expectations, some 200 sloths were in need of her help after bulldozers had destroyed their home.

Mongabay reports that, rather than leaving them to their fate, Monique Pool brought the animals to her home, which she turned into an emergency shelter.

The video below details how the rescue operation went.

The sloths are all properly looked after, and the conservationists in charge of them hope that it will not be long until they are able to return them to the wild.

Logging companies that have little respect for the environment threaten the long-term survival of many animal species, Monique Pool explains.

She hopes that, at some point in the future, such companies will no longer be allowed to destroy forests for the sake of profits alone.
