14 DAY TRIAL // A Brazilian TV station wanted to make a story about Rio de Janeiro’s high crime rate, when a woman whom it was interviewing fell victim to a daring mugging attempt in broad daylight the other day.
As you can see in the video below, reporter Eduardo Tchao asked a woman on the street what her opinion about all the crime in the center of Rio was. Just as she was complaining about the lack of police in the area, a thief suddenly appeared from behind and attempted to snatch her gold necklace.
The thief broke the necklace, but didn't manage to get the jewelry from the woman before fleeing across the road. The reporter dropped his microphone and tried to chase the mugger down but wasn't able to catch him.
Luckily, the woman suffered only a scratched neck, but the incident again draws attention to the high crime levels in the city. And the situation is even more concerning if we take into consideration that the attempted robbery took place right next to the State Security headquarters.
Rio de Janeiro is set to host the FIFA World Cup this summer and the Summer Olympics in 2016, so taking care of the situation is an urgent task for local authorities.
