The fact that, after winning a competition, athletes tend to throw their hands in the air and jump for joy, is known to pretty much everybody, including people who do not take pleasure in spending hours on end watching various sporting events.

According to the folks at AsapSCIENCE, who pieced together the video above, said gesture, together with others of its kind, is a non-verbal manifestation of the emotions a winning athlete experiences.

Otherwise put, it is simply a means to let other people know what the athlete is thinking and feeling. Interestingly enough, it appears that it also serves to assert domination.

Thanks to the so-called mirror neurons that the human brain is equipped with, people who do not take part in sports competitions and merely settle for watching others perform also experience pride when their favorite athletes win.

This means that they too feel the urge to raise their hands and push their chest out. As several studies have shown, this happens because their bodies are flooded with dopamine and adrenaline.
