Chromosomes aren't X-shaped, have a fairly messy appearance

A couple of days ago, researchers announced that, according to their investigations, chromosomes were shaped like an X only when the cell in which they were located was about to divide. Thus, most of the time, their appearance was fairly messy.

The video above was released by scientists at England's Babraham Institute and details what chromosomes really look like.

As shown in the video, these blobs of DNA are stunningly complex. For some reason, they remind me of spaghetti. Al dente spaghetti, to be more precise.

The researchers at the Babraham Institute expect that their 3D models of chromosomes will make it easier for scientists to map certain genes.

“Using these 3D models, we have begun to unravel the basic principles of chromosome structure and its role in how our genome functions,” Dr. Peter Fraser says.
