The decomposition process lasted four and a half weeks

Those who have just enjoyed breakfast, lunch, or dinner or plan to do so in the following few hours might want to refrain from clicking the “play” button and watching the footage above.

The video was posted online a few days ago by the folks at Earth Unplugged, and it shows a monitor lizard decomposing up to the point when all that remains is the animal's skin and its skeleton.

Microbes, maggots, and beetles also feature in the video, not because they bribed the director and asked him to let them make an appearance on screen, but because they are the ones in charge of making sure the decomposition process takes place according to plan.

As the folks who carried out this experiment explain, there are several stages of decomposition: fresh, bloat, active decay, and advanced decay.

By the looks of it, each is smellier than the other.
