ABC Digital has rolled out a new Oscars app for the year 2012. Starting with nominations, you can use the app to stay up-to-date on all things leading up to the 84th Academy Awards, and then watch Oscar night on February 26 on your iDevice, for free.

During Oscar season, the app serves you by offering access to a complete nominee lists, trailers, and buzz worthy videos, says ABC. You also get hosted specials on fashion and nominated films and actors.

The best part, however, is that you get the ultimate insider's view of Hollywood's biggest night on February 26. ABC promises to offer over a dozen live backstage and Red Carpet video streams.

“Many iPad, iPhone and iPod touch owners use their device daily while watching TV to look for show-related information,” said Karin Gilford, SVP of Digital Media for ABC.com. “Our goal is to utilize the best digital technologies to make sure those fans are having a really full, immersive experience leading up to, during and after the Oscars. We want this to be the next best thing to attending the show itself.”

Christina Kounelias, chief marketing officer, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, added: “We love the level of interaction this app provides our fans. It pulls back the curtain and takes viewers on a backstage experience that is fun and engaging. It allows fans access and vantage points that guests in the theater don’t have.”

A DIRECT mode will allow any iDevice viewer to pick any of six camera vantage points and zoom in to see what interests them the most.

Unfortunately for those living outside the United States, the app will require an Internet connection from a US territory based ISP and iOS 4.2 or later.
