In recent years, chemists have developed several alternatives to run-of-the-mill sugar, seeing how this food and drinks ingredient is known to cause all sorts of health trouble if consumed in excess.

Of the sugar alternatives that hit the market, the artificial sweetener aspartame proved quite a hit. In fact, latest estimates say it is now used to make about 6,000 products, diet sodas and low-calorie treats included.

Although aspartame was tested extensively before the food industry was given the green light to start using it, there are still some rumors that it can cause disease. Some even say it can give people cancer.

In new video released earlier today, scientists with the American Chemical Society debunk these stories about how consuming aspartame leaves people vulnerable to all sorts of health complications.

Here's what you need to know: although one of the metabolites of aspartame is formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, there is no evidence that this artificial sweetener can produce enough formaldehyde to turn dangerous.

Further, researchers are yet to find solid evidence that, as claimed by some, aspartame can affect cognition and make people more vulnerable to depression, anxiety and other such psychological issues.

Plainly put, this artificial sweetener is perfectly safe, and contrary to whatever rumors are going around these days, you really shouldn't worry about what the occasional diet soda might do to you.
