Ever stop to wonder what makes smartphones... well... smart? Apple, LG, Samsung and other giants might be the ones designing and creating them, but at the end of the day, it's still Mother Nature that you should be thanking.

The video below details the anatomy and chemistry of smartphones. More precisely, this super cool animation explains what chemical elements are used to make smartphones, and what each of these elements does.

This might come as a bit of a shock to some people, but as it turns out, typical smartphones contain both silver and gold in their makeup. Science has come a long way, but since alchemy is still a dead-end career, these “ingredients” come from nature.

As detailed in the video, dozens of other elements get together to form your run-off-the-mill smartphone. Some form the battery and help keep your favorite gadgets in the whole wide world alive and kicking.

What's really interesting is that, although many see it as no more and no less than a piece of glass, a smartphone's screen contains some of the rarest elements on Earth. These elements help produce the colors displayed by the gadget.

Check out the video to learn more about the makeup of your smartphone, and get ready to be amazed by the complexity of these devices we carry around in our pockets, often without too much consideration.
