This June 8 is all about celebrating World Oceans Day. The animation above was released just in time for this celebration, and highlights the need to protect these natural ecosystems.

The short film is narrated by oceanographer Sylvia Earle, and features hand-drawn images.

The oceanographer points out that, though we live on land, we rely on oceans just as much as whales and coral reefs do.

To put it bluntly: we'd meet our demise in an instant should the world's ocean suddenly disappear.

Pollution and overfishing are the two main threats our planet's oceans are now facing. The only good thing is that, since we're the ones who created these problems, it is within our reach to end them.

The ocean is “the blue heart of the planet,” Sylvia Earle says in this video, and I can't help but agree with her.
