When the NFL announced that, instead of a famous pop star, they had chosen soprano Renée Fleming to sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl XLVIII, many people had never even heard of the name before.

Safe to say, after last night’s flawless and riveting rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” Fleming is a name that won’t be forgotten too soon.

Though having her sing the National Anthem was clearly a bold choice because she was an opera singer not able to compete in popularity with a pop star and the first opera singer ever chosen to do the honors, it definitely paid off.

Right now, reactions online indicate that many think Fleming did justice to the historic moment and rose to the occasion. Moreover, she is actually credited with delivering the most breathtaking and beautiful rendition of the Anthem in recent years, if not actually ever.

Fleming was accompanied by a military chorus and you can see her rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” above in full. You be the judge if there’s any foundation to the current buzz around the performance.
