Local authorities used 450 pounds (204 kilograms) of dynamite to destroy the plant

A few days ago, Florida Power and Light Co. used some 450 pounds (204 kilograms) of dynamite to bring down a local power plant that had been operating since the 1960s.

Under any other circumstances, people might sigh at the thought that Florida has been left without this iconic set of red and white smoke stacks.

Still, the plant was destroyed to clear the land for the construction of a more environmentally-friendly one, which is expected to be up and running by 2016 at the latest, so I dare say it was well worth it.

The Inquisitr reports that the natural gas plant set to replace the demolished facility will require roughly 35% less fuel, and will produce more energy.

Its power output will be more than enough to meet the energy demands of 260,000 Florida residents.
