Sony recalls over 400,000 DSC-T5 digital cameras

Sony's got quite a long history with recalls, especially after last year's massive laptop battery scandal. However, it would seem that the Japanese giant will have to go through that ordeal once again (albeit at a smaller scale), but this time no batteries are involved. No, this time they're recalling Cyber-Shot digital cameras, which, according to several reports, could represent a real, physical threat for their users.

First of all, let's see what Sony had to say about this whole thing on the company's website. "Sony has recently discovered that, with certain units of its Digital Still Camera "Cyber-shot" DSC-T5 released on the market in September 2005, there is the possibility that metal plating on the bottom of the camera unit may warp, causing slight cut or scratch to the skin of the user when it is directly touched. Due to an irregularity during the initial part production, the adhesive strength of the metal plating declined. As a result, it became more likely that damage to the bottom casing could cause the metal plating to peel away and warp outward."

The company's statement goes on to say that they'll replace the bottom casing (free of charge, of course), for all the users who contact them. However, this recall applies only to a limited number of Cyber-Shots, namely those with the serial numbers between 3010001 - 3081200. In order to find out whether your camera is included in this recall, you should check out the serial number located on the sticker attached to the bottom of the camera.

This is just the latest in a series of very serious problems for the Japanese company, who, as mentioned earlier, also had to deal with the scandal related to the MacBook batteries that overheated and caught fire. The respective issue had some pretty nasty financial effects on Sony, not to mention the fact that the company's public image was seriously affected. Now, we'll just have to wait and see where this new scandal will lead.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there.
