A positively mind-boggling video released earlier this week shows daredevil Sam Cossman, filmmaker and entrepreneur, standing on the edge of the Marum crater on the volcanic island of Ambrym in the South Pacific, overlooking a bubbling lava lake.

The footage, available below, was shot when Sam Cossman and a group of researchers visited the Marum crater looking to put together a three-dimensional map of the lava lake it hosts and collect soil samples that they hoped would reveal the chemistry of this barren place.

The filmmaker explains that the video comprises scenes obtained with the help of drones. He goes on to detail that the reason he is shown wearing a heat-resistant suit in this footage is that, without it, the lava lake would have surely fried him.

In fact, Sam Cossman says that the drones that were used to shoot this video didn't exactly have the time of their life either. On the contrary, they operator had to be really careful to make sure that they would not be corroded and destroyed by the toxic gases and the intense heat coming from the lava lake.

Interestingly enough, this wasn't the filmmaker's first visit to the Marum crater. Thus, it was last year that Sam Cossman released another brilliant video showing him descending all the way to the crater's rim. Fear not, this other video is available just below the one released this week.
