The test helped researchers determine how microraptors managed to fly

Paleontologists looking to figure out how dinosaurs named microraptors managed to fly despite their impressive body weight have recently pieced together a life-size model of one such creature.

The model, whose name is Maurice, was then made to fly inside a tunnel. All the while, the researchers closely monitored it and tried to figure out how it managed to stay airborne.

Check out the video above to see how the experiment unfolded.

Apparently, microraptors used to fly by using their wings to generate large amounts of lift and then allowing their body to glide through the sky.

These findings suggest that, contrary to popular belief, feathers did not emerge as a flight aid. On the contrary, they probably first served to attract mates. It was only in time that they came to be used for flying.
