Magic mushrooms have been growing on our planet for millennia now. Contrary to what some might assume, we humans didn’t first discover them just a few decades ago.

Historical records indicate that psychedelic mushrooms have been part of our diet for at least 9,000 years. In ancient times, they were used in religious practices. These days, they are chiefly viewed as a recreational drug.

The active ingredient in magic mushrooms is a chemical compound known to the scientific community as psilocybin. Once ingested, this compound gets broken down into psilocin.

Having reached the brain, psilocin boosts the activity of a neurotransmitter dubbed serotonin. As a result, the brain is overly stimulated and people begin to experience visual, auditory and all sorts of other hallucinations.

Of the people familiar with psychedelic mushrooms, some say that these hallucinations are quite enjoyable. However, others claim to have gone through some really nasty episodes.

Thus, it sometimes happens that people who consume magic mushrooms experience fear and even paranoia while under the influence of psilocin. Such feelings are usually brought on by especially scary hallucinations.

The good news is that, in most cases, the effects of this compound wear off in about 3 to 8 hours. The bad news is that, while high on shroomies, just one hour can seem like an eternity.
