On June 21, a giraffe living at Brookfield Zoo in Chicago gave birth to a perfectly healthy male calf. The mother giraffe delivered its offspring outside, in an off-exhibit area.

At the time of its birth, the baby giraffe weighed 173 pounds (almost 80 kilograms) and measured 5 feet and 9 inches (about 1.5 meters) in height, ZooBorns says. It doesn't yet have a name, but it probably won't be long until it gets one.

The video above shows the male calf being born, learning to stand on its own two feet and starting to grow accustomed to life at the zoo.

Giraffe births aren't a very smooth affair (the calf falls to the ground from a considerable height), so those faint of heart might want to skip the first 20 seconds.

Over the past decade, the world's giraffe population has declined by 40%. Habitat loss and human hunting are to “thank” for this.
