Conservationists have argued time and time again that fishing nets have to be held accountable for the death of thousands on marine animals on a yearly basis.

Therefore, they will probably be glad to hear that one company in Hawaii, i.e. Covanta Energy, has recently decided to collect fishing nets and use them to produce electricity.

A CNN report explains that, following their being collected, the fishing nets are burnt and used to produce Steam-generated electricity.

According to Covanta Energy, the electricity produced in this manner supplies nearly 10% of Honolulu's overall energy demands.

Although said company maintains that its using the fishing nets to produce electricity greatly benefits the environment, some might argue that the business of burning trash is anything but green-oriented, simply because significant amounts of toxic fumes are bound to be released in the environment.
