Only the strongest, most determined male gets to father pups

When it comes to having access to females and being able to mate, most male animals have no choice but to fight each other.

These battles are meant to decide which of them is the strongest, and it is only this particular specimen that will eventually be granted the opportunity to pass on its genes.

Because elephant seals are some of the world’s largest creatures, it comes as no surprise that whenever two males belonging to this species decide to confront each other, they put on quite a violent show.

In case anyone was wondering – although, from where we stand, things are pretty straightforward –, elephant seals get their name from the rather large appendage males display on the top of their noses, which more than resembles an elephant's trunk.
