Watch Dogs, the open world hacking-focused title developed and publisher by Ubisoft, is taking the number one position on the United Kingdom market during its first week on sale and is apparently the best-selling new release of the year.

The title has been offered on the PC, the PlayStation 4 from Sony, the Xbox One from Microsoft and current-gen consoles and allows players to become Aiden Pearce, a capable hacker who needs to go on a revenge quest while exploiting the information flowing around him in Chicago.

The game has had some big launch problems on the PC, with plenty of gamers still unable to actually play the title, but they seem not to have affected its actual sales and Watch Dogs might lead the UK top ten for a while longer.

Mario Kart 8 has surprisingly managed to reach second place in the United Kingdom during its own launch week, according to UKIE, despite the smaller install base of the Wii U, which is a sign of the devotion that fans of the racing title feel for it.

The new game is designed to introduce anti-gravity to the mix of mechanics, but Nintendo has otherwise opted to keep the experience very familiar while upgrading the graphics and offering more social options to its fans.

It will be interesting to see how Mario Kart 8 performs in the long term and if it has the power to lead a renaissance for the Wii U, which has been underperforming.

Wolfenstein: The New Order, the first-person shooter from developer Machine Games and publisher Bethesda, has fallen to the last place of the podium after being first a week before and will probably continue to lose sales in the coming weeks.

FIFA 14, the venerable football sim from EA Sports, is in fourth place at the moment, despite the delay associated with the launch of the World Cup themed content for the Ultimate Team mode.

It is followed by the PlayStation 3 edition of indie hit Minecraft, which has lost three places during the previous week, according to UKIE, and by the 2014 FIFA World Cup title from EA Sports, which is only available on the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360.

Titanfall, the shooter from Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts, is in seventh place, while in eighth, gamers will find the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft.

Call of Duty: Ghosts continues to perform well in ninth, and the United Kingdom top ten is closed down by the LEGO Movie Video Game from Warner Bros.
