Resonance experiment shows what happens when sand is exposed to different frequencies

First off, fair warning: unless you want to experience first-hand what mild hearing loss is all about, do not try recreating this experiment at home.

The video above shows what happens when sand placed on a metal plate is exposed to different frequencies. The frequencies make the plate vibrate, and these vibrations cause the sand to form stunning geometric patterns.

As the frequency that the metal plate is exposed to increases, so does the complexity of the patterns. This is because the sand only gathers in those parts of the metal plate where there are no vibrations.

Since some of the frequencies used to make the plate vibrate are ear-piercingly high, I recommend that you lower the volume before watching this second video.
