Because of its peculiar tail, the whale has been nicknamed Delta

The blue whale featured in the video below is nicknamed Delta. Apparently, the marine mammal got this name after whale watchers noticed that its tail looked very much like an airplane wing.

The footage was recently shot in the waters of Dana Point, in southern California.

It may very well be that both whale watching enthusiasts and wildlife researchers are all too familiar with Delta and its anatomical peculiarities, yet this sighting did bring joy both to those who had the opportunity to have a close look at the whale and to those who had the chance to watch the video.

Grind TV say that Delta was first spotted back in 1987. At that time, the whale was swimming in the waters of the Gulf of the Farralones, west of San Francisco.
