As Bill Nye points out, some asteroids don't constitute a threat to our planet. This is because they are fairly small, and disintegrate in our planet's atmosphere long before they can cause any noteworthy damage.
What we need to worry about are big asteroids that can survive the long journey towards Earth, and still pack enough force to shake things up when they reach us.
