A 26-year-old bottlenose dolphin living at Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, Illinois has recently given birth to a healthy calf. Check out the video above to see how the delivery went.

Zoo staff say that, although Ellie's labor lasted several hours, both the mother dolphin and her offspring are in perfectly good health.

At birth, the baby dolphin weighed 40 pounds (13.6 kilograms) and measured about 3 feet (almost 1 meter) in length. As the video shows, it started swimming immediately after delivery.

The calf appears keen on exploring its surroundings, yet does not stray away from its mother.

Keepers say the baby dolphin is nursing successfully, so odds are it'll soon start putting on more weight.

The family will be closely monitored over the following 30 days, seeing how dolphin calves are most vulnerable during their first month of life.
