The development team at inXile working on Wasteland 2 has delivered a new update on the squad-based experience, showing off the world map for the first time and explaining how gamers will use it to travel and find new adventures.

Montgomery Markland, a producer working on the title, states in a big Kickstarter update that players will have to pay attention to a variety of factors when moving around the new map.

He states, “Primary exploration occurs in a 3D map that shows your immediate surrounding environment with representative scale and geographic features of the region. Significant locations, settlements and sites reveal themselves as you scout around.”

The system is similar to that seen in Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir and rewards gamers who are willing to take risks and go into areas where significant danger awaits.

The developer adds, “There is plenty of space to wander around, discover hidden resources based on your character’s build, fight random encounters and discover minor sites that may be explored in normal game mode.”

The general layout of the Wasteland 2 map is similar to that of the first game in the series, but InXile says that plenty of locations have been tweaked to make the overall experience more engaging.

The biggest dangers facing the party of the player as it moves around are dehydration and radiation poisoning.

The first threat can be managed as long as the rangers have good survival skills and plenty of canteens filled with water to share.

The second problem is more insidious and will ask players to get solid information from NPCs before heading out.

Wasteland 2 is a classic party-based role-playing game that will offer gamers the opportunity to create their own characters and make choices that influence the game world.

At the moment, the game is being tested by a small group of alpha players.
