Warhammer 40k: Regicide is coming to Steam Early Access on May 5, developer and publisher Hammerfall Publishing has announced.

The title uses Games Workshop's extremely popular licensed universe and blends the fictional lore of space marines fighting space orcs and aliens with the mechanics of chess.

If titles set in the Warhammer fantasy universe are usually adaptations of already existing board games, this is nowhere as apparent as in Regicide, where players will be able to employ a series of mechanics that draw heavy inspiration from tabletop games, as well as various dynamical tactical abilities and objectives and the ability to call for backup and strikes from off-board.

The game has been designed to provide a brutal version of the classic mind sport, including battlefields with obstacles, power ups, as well as a wide array of psychic powers, special abilities, and a whole bunch of strategic options for players to explore.

Gamers will be able to enjoy Warhammer 40k: Regicide in single-player, in skirmishes against the competent Codex AI designed specifically to take strategy to the next level, or in battles against other human opponents.

Regicide will debut with the Blood Angels campaign

The story of the single-player campaign mode follows the Blood Angels, as they investigate a mysterious transmission on Hethgar Prime, and the launch trailer that Hammerfall published ahead of the title's release sets the scene for the upcoming action.

The developer aims to issue regular updates while Warhammer 40,000: Regicide is in Early Access, taking the community's feedback into account while working on finishing the game. Initially, only the Blood Angels will be available to gamers, and the Ork clans and Space Marines chapters of the campaign will be added as development nears completion.

The game will afford users the opportunity to delve into the enthralling lore of the universe crafted by Games Workshop and explore the classic conflict in a novel way.

The full game is expected to come out sometime later this year, with a mobile version to follow in 2016. Hammerfall aims to make Warhammer 40k: Regicide cross-platform compatible, thus enabling PC and mobile users to go head to head in multiplayer.
