Digital Extremes has released a pretty massive update for its science fiction-themed third-person action game, Warframe.

The new update, titled Update 14: The Mad Cephalon, focuses on making the game more approachable for newcomers and immersing players even further into the world of Warframe.

The additions include a completely overhauled user interface, introducing players to their ship, a new quests system, the arrival of the greatly anticipated pet companions, and the unveiling of a brand new Warframe, the Mirage.

"We're putting the 'B' back in Beta with this update. Seriously though, we need a new word for Beta. It just doesn't fully encompass the evolutionary process that games like Warframe go through over their lifetime. Getting endless feedback from our players along with our own ambitions for the game makes us continually work to improve it. Sometimes that means re-working major foundational components to the game like the new-player experience.

"This entire experience has been a game changer for us – direct player connection – tap into it, nurture it, know what to take from it and a game can become more than you ever imagined it to be," commented Steve Sinclair, creative director at Digital Extremes.

So far, the developer's efforts have paid off, as Warframe just went past 10 million registered users worldwide, on both platforms it's available on, Windows PC and PlayStation 4, in merely a year of Open Beta access.

The new Warframe, the Mirage, is a master of illusion that relies on guile to gain the upper hand on the battlefield. Its abilities range from creating an entourage of illusions meant to distract and confuse enemies, booby-trapping nearby objects, to firing an energy orb that shoots lasers and can be remotely detonated and harnessing the power of light in order to deal increased damage, or the power of the shadows in order to become untrackable.

Newcomers to the game will be greeted by the re-imaged user interface, as well as a new quest that will walk them through Warframe, providing vital information on gameplay, lore, game modes and menus.

Pet Companions are a brand new feature to the game, with players now being able to unlock a Genetic Foundry used for breeding various biological specimens right on your ship.

In addition to this, a series of new weapons have been included in order to expand the arsenal even further, and a new player versus player game mode has been added, replacing the existing Dark Sectors Solar Rails mode, as well as expanded editions of the already existing ones.
