Timegate unveils sci-fi shooter

Section 8 is part of the regulation of the US Military dealing with cases of a soldier being declared unfit for duty. The special part about section 8 is that it deals with insane soldiers. Getting a section 8 was one of the best ways to get to go home from Korea or Vietnam and movies like "Armageddon Now" or "M.A.S.H." brought the meaning of a "section 8 " to the whole world.

Now, Timegate Studios, after having delivered the latest expansion to F.E.A.R., named Perseus Mandate and a critical flop, is aiming to get a game out featuring protagonists that have been discharged from the military under a section 8 clause. Timegate is not letting out too many details about their game, but what we know follows.

The setting of the game is an original intellectual property developed in-house by Timegate. In the distant future, humans have colonized the galaxy and, as all good space operas go, battle is brewing on the outer colonies. The official announcement on the Timegate site speaks about "insurrection," so we might be seeing full human-on-human onslaught rather than the usual human-on-alien battles. The only guys good and, we presume, crazy enough to go behind enemy lines are the battle-hardened and crazy (I really can't stress this enough) soldiers of the special 8 Armored Infantry Division. This is the backstory and, although frugal, it sparks some interesting questions. How could the fact that you're "crazy" impact the gameplay? Will each soldier have some special abilities? Could theirs be a mechanic "craziness" that makes you more lethal or more vulnerable? The only mention of something like a special ability so far is the fact that players can "dynamically alter the flow of combat as they see fit."

Apart from the above-stated details, Timegate says the game will feature cooperative gameplay and that it will be developed for current and next gen consoles. With a release date somewhere in 2009, you can check back and read further details as they become available.

Until then, here's the trailer that the developers have recently released:
