Nik Wallenda, the daredevil crossing Little Colorado River Gorge at 1,500 ft (457,2 m) on Sunday is part of a family of aerialists.
The “Flying Wallendas” have been walking on a high-wire since the 1780s and Nik is continuing his family's tradition. They have introduced their act to the States in 1928.
"It's about carrying on family history. [...] I don't even get a buzz," he says, according to a report by USA Today. He says that walking on a wire is simply going to work for him.
The 34-year-old performer and seven-time record breaker comes from a family where three people have died walking a tightrope without a harness.
His great-grandfather lost his life during a stunt in Puerto Rico when he was 73 years old, while his attempt was being broadcast live on TV.
"He should have quit when he was 50," Wallenda explains.
