Specialists writing in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine argue that people who walk, cycle or use public transport to get to work are in better health than those who choose to either drive or take a cab.

Not to beat about the bush, recent investigations have shown that, when compared to people who drive, those who walk to work are roughly 40% less likely to develop diabetes.

What's more, they are 17% less prone to suffer from high blood pressure, EurekAlert informs us.

Cyclists and people using public transport appear to also be less vulnerable to said medical conditions, the researchers claim.

According to the same source, 19% of the people who drive or take a cab to work are obese. By comparison, obesity only affects 15% of those to walk and 13% of those who cycle.

Commenting on these findings, specialist Anthony Laverty said that, “This study highlights that building physical activity into the daily routine by walking, cycling or using public transport to get to work is good for personal health.”
