Bringing something new in the area of mobile phone technology proves to be quite a difficult endeavor. Or so it seems for the people at Motorola that decided to equip their products with an innovative concept of the smellphone.

Motorola has just been granted the patent for an invention that they called "Communication device having a scent release feature and method thereof". It's a long name for a quite simple concept with questionable use.

The mobile phone has a heat-generating device that increases the temperature of a scent pack up to 54 degrees Celsius, thus releasing a fragrance. The heat generator can be the power amplifier or the electrical circuit found in the cellular. So, it's far from providing scent communication, as it may sound at first. This actually proves to be a mobile phone equipped with an air refresher. Even the technology looks similar to that found in home perfumes that need to be plug-in in order to start releasing aromas. They also function on a heat-generating system that Motorola considered it could be applied to mobile phones too.

The idea came to people at Motorola as a solution for having a pleasant smell source available at all times. Many people appreciate products that offer different aromas, especially when they are away from their homes or offices. Fortunately for them, the smell pack lasts for a few weeks until it needs replacing.

This mobile phone concept might turn out to be appealing to women, especially if the scent packs have high quality fragrances. In fact, it would be no surprise if Motorola made this invention an opportunity to collaborate with famous perfume makers in order to bring status and style to its line of smell packs.

We are still thinking of various occasions when such a mobile phone might have any considerable practical use. Still, it comes as an interesting flick from Motorola to bring novelty to the mobile phone market in order to maintain the appreciation they've received so far from their clients.
