A 91-year-old man from Indiana proved that perseverance and ambition can help you achieve your goals in life when he finally received his high school diploma after more than 70 years of waiting.

Russell Snyder, a World War II veteran, reportedly left high school to help take care of his family during the great depression, although he was just months away from graduation. He was later drafted into military service after the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor and never got the change to finish school.

“He left and went to serve his county, and came back and had a family of his own. So, he’s made several sacrifices. One for the family and one for his county,” Ron Alting, an Indiana state senator, said.

With a little help from his sons, the elderly man managed to complete the final requirements needed to obtain the graduation certificate. It took him about one year to get the diploma, but he says it was worth the wait.

Seven decades after Mr. Snyder finished his military service in World War II, his friends and family gathered to see him receive his certificate of graduation in LaFayette on Saturday.

“It's great and I appreciate it very much. I’ve always wanted one and I’ve finally got it,” the proud veteran said.
