10 students from 9 countries will compete for the Photographer of the Year award

A couple of weeks ago, the World Photography Organisation officially announced the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards shortlists, revealing the photographers that will compete for the L’Iris D'Or / Sony World Photography Awards Photographer of the Year title.

In a recent press release, the World Photography Organisation has also presented the ten Student Focus finalists who will have a chance at winning the 2014 Student Focus Photographer of the Year title.

The finalists are:

Argentina – Nadia Navarro, Al Aire Bangladesh – Rahul Talukder, Pathshala South Asia Media Institute China – Li Dandan, Nanjing University of the Arts Denmark – TOR Birk Trads, Danish School of Media New Zealand – Chloe Riddell, University of Auckland Romania – Sebastian Vacariuc, Babes-Bolyai University South Africa – Russell Bruns, Rhodes University South Africa – Tara Mette, Stellenbosch Academy of Design & Photography United Kingdom – Scarlet Evans, Central St Martins USA – Jordan VanSise, Marylhurst University

The finalists will now have to submit another series of photos under the theme “Self-portraits,” shot using the latest Sony a7 full-frame mirrorless camera given to each of them as part of their prize.

All images sent by the finalists will be showcased at the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards exhibition, which takes place from May 1-18 at Somerset House, London, and published in the 2014 edition of the annual Sony World Photography Awards book.

The finalists and their tutors will be flown to London to attend the ceremony and find out the 2014 Student Focus Photographer of the Year winner, who will be awarded a €35,000 / $48,000 prize that consists of Sony photographic equipment for their university.
