Hamrick Software has updated VueScan, its flagship product that can help Mac users produce quality scans, allowing tweaks to color balance and more. VueScan supports most high-quality flatbed and film scanners and now adds support for additional scanners, as well as support for IR cleaning. VueScan has recently celebrated its 10th Anniversary.

According to the release notes for VueScan 8.5.16, Hamrick Software has added support for infrared cleaning with some HP scanners, and improved support for newer scanners from the same vendor. Lexmark scanners should also be handled a tad better on Mac OS X, Hamrick Software claims.

“VueScan 0.1 was first released in 1998 with support for a single scanner on Windows only. Within 5 years VueScan supported more than 400 scanners and after 10 years of development, VueScan now supports more than 1,200 scanners on 3 operating systems and in 40 languages, has been downloaded more than 5 million times and has been purchased by more than 170,000 people worldwide,” Ed Hamrick, the creator of VueScan, said.

“For the past ten years we've continued to add support for more scanners and we've made thousands of improvements and added hundreds of features that customers have asked for. Since we first released VueScan 8.4 two years ago, we've made more than 600 improvements and it's really changed a lot in this time,” Ed concluded.

There are two Editions of VueScan – Standard and Professional. However, users only need to download a single file for either version. The first time they download the software, it operates as a free trial, but as soon as they purchase and enter the serial number, the Standard Edition or Professional Edition features are enabled. Also, the dollar-sign watermark is disabled.

Existing VueScan users can update to the latest version for free. To update, just download the trial version using the link below, and the software will automatically recognize if you've already purchased it. Just install it over your old version of VueScan, and you're good to go. Upgrades are free in the first year after you purchase the Standard Edition. Upgrades are always free if you purchase the Professional Edition. VueScan requirements call for Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) or later and a supported scanner.
