VueScan, the powerful, cross-platform scanning solution developed by Hamrick Software, has reached version 8.6.22 for Mac OS X. The maintenance update is free to download and install for existing license holders, and is recommended for improving the 'Crop | Multi crop' feature with some negative strips, as well as the cropping of single-frame slides.

In addition to these two improvements, the release notes for VueScan 8.6.22 reveal that Hamrick Software has included a number of bug fixes as well. The complete release notes, as posted at the company’s website, have been reproduced below:

- Improved 'Crop | Multi crop' with some negative strips; - Improved cropping of single-frame slides; - Fixed problem with Minolta Scan Dual III and Scan Dual IV; - Fixed problem with Agfa SnapScan 1212U; - Fixed problem with some WIA scanners on Windows Vista and Windows 7; - Fixed problem with some older Canon MP-series scanners on Windows; - Fixed problem with printing too many copies on Windows; - Fixed problem with color ADF scans on HP 5300c.

As noted by Ed Hamrick, the head of Hamrick Software, VueScan supports flatbed and film scanners, as well as several digital camera RAW file types. The program automatically adjusts images to an optimum color balance, which reduces the need to work in Photoshop, Hamrick claims. Having been designed to produce colors that look true to life, VueScan includes a built-in color calibration of scanners, and offers options for scanning faded slides and prints, batch scanning, IT8 color calibration and other advanced scanning features, and supports more than 100 brands of negative films.

In order to upgrade an existing copy of VueScan, customers simply need to download the latest version from either the developer’s website or Softpedia, and double-click the resulted DMG file. After dragging the new version to their Applications folder, VueScan will automatically recognize an existing license. Hamrick Software’s policies say that upgrades to new versions are free in the first year after one purchases the Standard Edition, while those who purchase the Professional Edition always get these upgrades for free. When a person first downloads and installs the program, VueScan runs in trial mode.
