14 DAY TRIAL // The web application launched by the Swedes at Volvo Trucks back in 2001 has now been significantly upgraded with a new, more user friendly version. The Environmental Footprint Calculator offers tips for reducing truck emissions and increase awareness on the environmental impact of biogas and biodiesel as opposed to fossil fuels.
The web tool calculate the environmental footprint of several vehicles, and of an entire fleet for that matter. Customers can also use it to compare their environmental impact with three different trucks' environmental footprints.
For example, one can compare the results with Volvo Trucks' newly launched models, the Volvo FH16 750 hp, Volvo FM MethaneDiesel and Volvo FE Hybrid.
In order to achieve a a user-friendlier application structure, more interactive and visual elements have been integrated in this latest version of the Web-based tool.
Through the new Environmental Footprint Calculator, truck drivers can also get suggestions for reducing the vehicle's negative environmental impact. For example, the calculator offers tips on alternative fuels and how they can cut your fuel consumption, and thus their climate impact.
"By training drivers in economical driving, ensuring correct wheel alignment or making sure that tyres have the correct pressure, you can significantly reduce emissions even for existing vehicles,” explains Lars Mårtensson, Director Environmental Affairs at Volvo Trucks.
“Correct wheel alignment and tyre choice, for instance, can cut fuel consumption by more than 10 percent. So you don't necessarily have to buy a new truck with a more energy-efficient engine - there are many measures you can take to support more sustainable development," he added.
In addition, the newly launched Environmental Footprint Calculator can calculate the vehicle's water consumption throughout its lifetime. This, Volvo Trucks says, is an important parameter since the vehicle's overall environmental impact has to do with more than just its climate impact.
