The new V40 recognizes any “human-like leg form” it comes across and deploys the airbag

After solving every other known problem with their cars, the Swedish engineers at Volvo thought it was time to tackle safety issues another way.

They developed the airbag meant to protect the safety of the pedestrian, for once. The sensors in the front bumper of the car will detect any impact and trigger the frontal airbag.

“People are soft and cars are hard,” this very informational video teaches us. The sensors will detect any “human-like leg form” and act accordingly.

The video also features fairly violent reenactments which, if nothing else, will make you fear V40 drivers and avoid crossing them – with or without pedestrian airbags.

Apparently, the airbag brings the added bonus of protecting the engine in case of an impact. That will keep those pedestrians from ruining your car!
