Gamers should just explore the new content and have fun

Gat Out of Hell has one of the most interesting premises that have ever been used in a video game, asking players to take control of either Johnny Gat or Kinzie Kensington as they go down into the place of forever tortured souls in order to rescue their leader in the Saints gang.

The new expansion is standalone and is not linked to the next full game in the franchise in any way, and the team at Volition wants gamers to simply have fun with the premise without thinking too much about the implications for the canonical narrative of the series.

Steve Jaros, the creative director at the studio, says that story is not the foundation of the Saints Row experience and that players should first experience Gat Out of Hell before thinking about the future.

The developer tells Destructoid that “It's a fun thing for our fans. A new place to go and play around with super powers. Another city to go and terrorize. Play as a character that people really seem to dig, and just have another excuse to have a lot of fun and do some shit that we're able to get away with.”

Jaros describes Gat Out of Hell as a weird and whimsical experience, something that pushes the insanity that Volition has become known for even further than usual.

The new standalone expansion will be launched in January of next year and the company is also creating an entirely new Re-Elected version of Saints Row IV, which will be offered on the Xbox One from Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 and includes all previously delivered content.

In Gat Out of Hell, the President, the leader of the Saints, is taken by the Devil in order to force him to marry his daughter Jezebel and then lead his armies against Heaven.

He does not exactly agree and the character the player chooses will have to fly and run around, using both magic and powerful weapons based on the deadly sins in order to take out demons and get out to the surface.

Volition says that historical figures will be included in the expansion and that some characters from the past of the series will also make appearances.

The development team wants players to engage in open world activities for as long as possible, filling a special meter which will trigger story moments and other encounters with the Devil.
