About disagreements with Hideo Kojima

At the on-going Anime Expo, David Hayter, the man who provided the deep and smoke filled voice of Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, spoke about how he was at odds with the game creator, Hideo Kojima, when it came to some of Snake's scenes in the game.

While he praised MGS4 for having less script issues than the previous games, like the forever famous "love on the battlefield" scene of the first release in the series, Hayter also said that, at times, he felt that the lines he had to read were not adapted to Solid Snake's evolution as the Metal Gear series progressed. He says that the widely publicized suicide scene featured in all the trailers seemed wrong to him, as he thought that the old soldier would be at ease when his end came and would not flinch when he had to take his own life.

Hayter also revealed the fact that the voice of Snake had become important enough so that he could veto some of the lines that Hideo Kojima wrote for him and that he could propose more in-character ideas that could be added to the script.

Speaking of scripts, Hayter lives as voice actor by night and script writer by day and he mentioned the huge influence that Hideo Kojima has when it came to writing, even though his style is different from that of the Japanese creator.

Hayter also mentioned the fact that a video adaptation of the Solid Snake saga is in the works at Sony and that he is one of the people who could write the script for the movie. He refused to give out any concrete information regarding it, but he mentioned that he would like to see Viggo Mortensen or Hugh Jackman take on the role of Solid Snake.
